Bri Dyer is a visual artist based in Tkaronto (Toronto), Canada. Currently, her work aims to showcase overlooked moments and memories, highlighting the beauty of routine life.
Dyer’s practice revolves around themes of the Everyday and memory, often using photography as reference. She believes that the appreciation of mundane moments is what brings true joy and contentedness to life and the overlooking of these moments strips day-to-day life of its uniqueness. In a society so focused on the next thing, her work brings attention to that which has already occurred.
Both photographs and paintings may capture a fleeting moment. A photograph can depict a snapshot of a moment within the confines of the frame. It is a quick moment and once passed, cannot be returned to. A painting can add in context from outside sources bringing in post-felt emotions and additive symbolism to push the feeling of the piece. Unlike a photograph, a painting is an event having temporal significance and the ability to create a hand-made portal into a memory, moment or experience.
Overall, Dyer’s work acts as a bridge between the current and the past, recontextualizing the image as an object and inserting herself into its existence. Through wet and dry mediums, she aims to share her appreciation for neglected or forgotten moments.
